SHEA BUTTER - ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW
Few ingredients in the world are as versatile as shea butter, especially when it comes to natural beauty remedies. This creamy, nutrient-packed substance, obtained from the nuts of the African shea tree, has been a hidden treasure for many centuries.
What is Shea Butter?
Shea butter, extracted from the nuts of the African shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) is found in the dry savanna regions of West, Central & East Africa. Known as the "tree of life," it has been an integral resource in these local communities for centuries.
Shea Butter is extracted through a rigorous traditional process that involves harvesting the nuts, drying and deshelling them before grinding them into a paste and then boiling to extract the fat.

This labour-intensive method, passed down through generations, produces raw, unrefined shea butter that is rich in nutrients.
The Historical Significance of Shea Butter
African is the largest producer of Shea Butter. Accounting for over 60% in production. Many communities in West, Central, and East Africa where this nut is grown have relied on shea butter to protect their skin and hair from harsh weather and also disinfect and heal wounds. They have also used Shea Butter for cooking as well as regarded it as a symbol of fertility.
In certain regions of West Africa, shea butter is referred to as "women's gold" because of its significant impact on the economic empowerment of women. It has led to the establishment of various enterprises and job opportunities. Approximately 3 million women are employed in the shea sector across West Africa.
It is also believed that the ancient Egyptian Queen, Cleopatra kept jars of shea butter for cosmetic reasons.

- Refined: The refined grade of Shea Butter has been processed to remove impurities, scent and colour but it may lose some beneficial properties.
- Fractionated: This grade involves a process where the Shea Butter is separated into different components for specific uses.
